The 2021 Cazoo Derby Festival Preview

The 2021 Cazoo Derby Festival preview

With the infamous Epsom Derby now less than two weeks away, we thought this was a good opportunity to look a little closer at some of the entrants for this years’ main event, to get you in the racing spirit!

The Epsom Derby is rich with heritage and tradition - it’s the greatest and most prestigious flat race in the racing calendar. Renowned for top class trainers, jockeys and horses, The Derby has a fantastic atmosphere with its loud, passionate, and excited crowds lining up both sides of the racetrack. Find out more about how The Epsom Derby began here.

This year will mark the return of the crowds to The Epsom Derby Racecourse for Ladies’ day and Derby day, after the 2020 weekend of races had to take place behind closed doors, we have no doubt that the locals and spectators will make up for lost time as they cheer on their favourites from the rails, stands and suites alike.

So without further ado, let’s take a look at the line-up for this year’s main event – The Derby Race…

This year is an incredibly tough one to call given the high calibre of entrants paired with an extremely exciting start to the year for many of the favourites, only time will tell who will come out on top on the notoriously challenging track that is The Epsom Downs!

Front runner ‘Bolshoi Ballet’ – This three-year-old colt has a lot of potential and is a big favourite in the 2021 Epsom Derby race. Trained by Aidan O’Brian his recent runaway victory at Leopardstown with Jockey Ryan Moore in the driving seat, has set him in good stead and real contention ahead of the 2021 Derby Day race. Keep your eye on this big and bold bay, he is not to be messed with!

High Definition – Another one of Aidan O’Brien’s boys and stablemate with Bolshoi Ballet, they are both on course to compete against one another for the first time at the Cazoo Derby Festival this June. High Definition hasn’t quite had the impeccable build up to the Derby that Bolshoi Ballet has had but don’t rule this colt out, he is focussed, has a great stride and most importantly is quick!

O’Brian has already had eight Derby winners to his credit – can he make it a ninth?  With two fantastic contenders for the 2021 race, we think the odds might be in his favour yet again!

Hurricane Lane -  Dante stakes at York is known as one of the last major Derby trials before the event and Hurricane Lane took the race by storm. He not only maintained his unbeaten record but also came back from being initially out paced by front runner Roman Empire to win by three quatres of a length – showing spectators and trainers alike he can definitely go the distance. Hurricane Lane certainly has a lot in his locker to give going from strength to strength in his last few meets.

Mohaafeth – William Haggas Mohaafeth has had heads turning in the last few months and this fast-improving colt is said to be more than ‘up for the fight’ at the fast-approaching Cazoo Derby Festival. He’s had 5 career starts already so knows his way around the blocks well enough and is described by many including his trainer as ‘hard mentally and physically’.
