The Vitality Blast is returning for 2022 we can’t wait for it to begin! In light of the event nearing, we thought we’d look ahead to events later this year. We will be covering the format, what happened in 2021 and looking ahead to the 2022 fixtures with some of the latest updates…
What is the Vitality Blast?
For those of you who are reading this and don’t know what the competition is, we’ve got you covered. The Vitality Blast is an annual cricket tournament played by the county championship teams.
Each team is allocated 20 overs to score as many runs as possible - whoever has the most, wins. If you want a more in-depth introduction to T20 cricket, check out our dedicated T20 blog piece here.
What happened in 2021?
Hampshire Hawkes, Somerset, Kent Spitfires and Sussex Sharks were the four teams who made it to finals day in 2021. And, as the T20 fans know, it wouldn’t be finals day if the spectators weren’t in fancy dress!
Kent Spitfires were victorious last year, beating Somerset by just 25 runs. Homegrown talent Jordan Cox and Zak Crawley starred in the victory, ending Kent’s 14-year wait for silverware. If you want to know what happened in more detail, click here.

What’s new for the Bears and Surrey in 2022?
Carlos Brathwaite is returning to play for the Birmingham Bears in 2022; the West Indian all-rounder will captain the Bears for the whole campaign. Brathwaite became a fan favourite last year in his debut season, helping the Bears reach their first quarter-final in four years. Hashim Amla will return as Surrey’s overseas player in 2022; the South African legend will be joined by other overseas players that will be confirmed soon. England’s T20 specialist, Chris Jordan, will captain Surrey, as they bid to make the quarterfinals after narrowly missing out on victory last year.
