For those who have never heard of The Hundred before, here is a short overview of the game. Be warned, you’re going to want to attend this electric event!
What is The Hundred?
The Hundred is a 100-ball competition featuring world-class cricket players. Eight city-based men’s and women’s teams compete for the win over a five-week period in the summer, with each squad made up of 15 players and a maximum number of 3 overseas stars.
Each team faces 100 balls, and the team with the most runs at the end is crowned the winner. This high-energy, tactical game is easy to follow and understand, so even if you’re not a cricket expert you will know what’s going on.
Bowlers are allowed to change ends after every 10 balls and can either be the same bowler for all 10 balls if desired by the captain, or they can change after every 5 balls.
This faster-paced game does not see the teams change ends as often as T20 cricket, and the whole game only lasts 2 hours and 30 minutes.
What Happened in 2021?
The Hundred in 2021 was hugely popular. After months of no sport and many sporting fixtures being played behind closed doors, the turnout and engagement with the game was phenomenal. The first ever winners of the men’s game were Southern Brave who defeated Birmingham Phoenix at the historic Lords cricket ground, beating them by 32 runs. The MVP of the tournament was Liam Livingstone from Birmingham Phoenix, who smashed his team into the final with an unbeaten 92 off just 40 balls, scoring 10 sixes in the semi-finals. He tops the sixes tally with an impressive total of 23 – he was a very worthy winner.
The women’s final saw the Oval Invincibles go head-to-head with Southern Brave at Lord’s in what was a fantastic match, and history making match as it was the first time in 200 years of Lord’s existence that a domestic women’s final had been played there. Some of the greatest England female cricketers were watched by the public for the first time by many, and was revolutionary for the women’s game, engaging viewers all across the country. The Oval Invincibles were victorious and lifted the winning trophy to the cheer of the crowd and the background of green fireworks. Will they be able to retain their title in 2022 or will we have a new champion?
