What is Rothesay International Eastbourne: Get to Know the Tournament
Where is Eastbourne Tennis Held?
Held at Devonshire Park Lawn and Tennis Club in the seaside town of Eastbourne, Rothesay International Eastbourne is an annual major grass-court tennis tournament. In fact, it is considered as a major “warm-up” for Wimbledon; held the week before, it provides ATP tour stars the final opportunity to prepare for the grass courts of London’s SW19. Furthermore, the event follows the iconic Queen’s Club Championships, proving that Eastbourne plays a vital role in the grass-court season story.
What Tennis is Played at Eastbourne?
Whilst a WTA 500 event, it was introduced as an ATP 250 event in 2009, allowing it to welcome a wealth of talent in both the men’s and women’s fields across the globe. It’s one of three tour-level grass court tournaments in Great Britain, with the others being the Rothesay Open Nottingham and Rothesay Classic Birmingham.
Who Won Eastbourne Tennis?
As previously mentioned, an incredible amount of talent has graced the courts of the South East coast club. Novak Djokovic, who, not only made his Eastbourne debut as a wildcard, took the trophy home and was crowned 2017 champion. A week later, he had not dropped a single set on his journey to the Wimbledon quarter-finals, proving that Eastbourne really is a key indicator. Queen’s Club Championships’ 2019 single and doubles winner, Feliciano Lopez has also shown his moves at Devonshire Park. Lopez boasts back-to-back victories in 2013 and 2014. The year before, former World No.1 Andy Roddick wore the Eastbourne crown.
As for the WTA tour, former World No.1 Karolina Pliskova triumphed in 2017 and 2019, whilst Latvia scored their first ever Eastbourne gold medal, with Jelena Ostapenko’s victory in 2021. As this year’s Dubai Championships winner, perhaps there’s more where that came from!
2022 was certainly another stellar year for the tournament too. Eight of the top ten women in the WTA rankings graced the courts of Devonshire Park, including reigning French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova and World No.3 Maria Sakkari. In fact, tennis legend and fan favourite Serena Williams headed down to the coast to show off her skills! However, it was Czech-born Petra Kvitova that lifted the trophy on Centre Court. As for the men's, Cameron Norrie and Dan Evans were in it for the Brits, but it was 2019 Eastbourne champion Taylor Fritz that wore the crown this year.
