Mother's Day: Celebrating Mums In Sport

March 24, 2022

To honour Mother’s Day on Sunday 27 March, we wanted to celebrate all the motherly figures in our lives: mothers, fathers, stepmothers, stepfathers, grandmothers, grandfathers, aunts, uncles, siblings, friends, close family friends…the list goes on. We all have someone in our life that we turn to in times of need, happiness and everything in between, whatever their relation is to us.

Inspiring Mothers in Sport

To mark the day we wanted to take a look at individuals in the world of sport who have helped their children or loved ones to become the world-class athletes that they are today.

Venus and Serena Williams shaking their opponents hands at the end of a match at Wimbledon

Serena and Venus William’s mother, Oracene Price

The William’s sisters are one of the most famous sibling duos in sport. The sisters started playing tennis at the age of four and were trained predominantly by their parents, Oracene Price and Richard Williams. The sisters then moved to West Palm Beach to be coached by Rick Macci, a legendary tennis trainer. The sister’s mother contributed largely to their training during their early years and helped to develop and strengthen their mental preparation. Oracene still keeps a close eye on Venus and Serena’s mentality before they go into a game and watches every element of their technique during their matches to this day. The William’s parents hard work paid off and their daughters have now claimed a combined 30 Grand Slam titles.

Andy and Jamie Murray’s mother, Judy Murray

Judy Murray was a keen tennis player herself when she was younger, winning 64 titles in Scotland during her junior and senior career. Judy started to coach her sons when they were young and has been a fantastic support to her boys ever since as they developed their performance and rose onto the world tennis stage. Both Andy Murray and his brother Jamie have won many titles; Jamie has won seven Grand Slam doubles titles and Andy is a three-time Grand Slam winner and two-time Olympic Champion, all of which have been achievable largely thanks to their mother Judy.

While we have only mentioned a couple of inspiring and supportive mothers of professional athletes, we want to shoutout to all the mums and influential figures in athlete’s lives and the wider sporting world, who work both behind the scenes being a great support system and those who take centre stage coaching and cheering their children on on the side-lines.
