We’ve briefly touched on our guest code of conduct at networking events (give it a read below), but what about the hosts of the pack? There isn’t an exact science to playing the host role at networking events, however there are certainly some considerations. If you want to make sure that you and your guests are having the best possible hospitality experience, then consider the below pointers…
Look the Part
If you’re playing host, you’ve got to stand out. We’re not suggesting you turn up in the wackiest shoes, brightest colours, and questionable hair styles here! However, you do want to make a good impression on your guests.
We suggest nearing on the smarter side to tick that ‘professional look’ box: smart, polished shoes, shirt and trousers, suit and jacket and summer dresses should all be heavily considered. One thing to note – some events may have stricter dress codes, such as a day at the races, or more relaxed attire is advised, such as a day on the golf course. With this in mind, we do suggest doing a bit of research into your chosen event beforehand.
Act Accordingly
You’ve got your event day outfit sorted, now for some event day do’s and don’ts:
- Be punctual: there’s nothing worse than a late host. Avoid the rudeness and embarrassment and ensure you’re punctual.
- Be attentive: make sure you’re there for your guest’s every need, to answer any questions, to make conversation and get to know them.
- Get personal: try and steer clear of the business talk when you can. It might be a good idea to talk business at the earlier stages of your hospitality experience – this way, you can spend the rest of the day getting to know your guests outside of the professional world.
- Mingle: as a host, it’s incredibly important that you spend time getting to know as many of your guests as possible. It’s easy to spark up conversations and talk for hours with someone you really get on with, but if you want to score those perfect host points, don’t forget about your other guests.
- Go easy on the beverages: we know how attractive a free-flowing, all-inclusive bar can be, but you have a long time to enjoy it. To avoid any mishaps or embarrassment, don’t go too hard too soon.
- Have fun: you shouldn’t feel the pressure just because you’re hosting this event. You need to enjoy yourself too! Make the experience a memorable one.
Post-Event Follow Ups
So, you’ve enjoyed your day of all-inclusive hospitality; soaking up the atmosphere, enjoying the exquisite food and drink offerings, and, of course, networking with clients and colleagues. It doesn’t stop there! We suggest doing a quick post-event follow up with your party members. Find out their thoughts - what they liked/disliked, any thoughts and opinions for future networking events, if there are any follow-up meetings required. Keep engaged with your clientele and they’ll most likely stick by you for the long-term.
