As part of our Queen’s Club Championships hospitality experiences, we are proud to have Nyetimber as our official sparkling wine supplier. Find out more about Nyetimber, their heritage and efforts in displaying a sustainable approach to winemaking.
Labelled as ‘perfectly British’, Nyetimber boasts miles of vineyards in the South of England, from Sussex, through Hampshire and to Kent. We got the inside scoop on Nyetimber – here’s some of their quirkiest facts:
- Nyetimber’s Head Winemaker, Cherie Spriggs, won Sparkling
Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine Challenge in 2018 – the first person outside of Champagne and the first female to ever win this award! - Nyetimber own a beautifully reimagined 1968 Routemaster Bus (pictured), aptly named The Nyetimber, which attends iconic British events throughout the year. Guests can relax and enjoy a glass of England’s finest sparkling wine in a luxurious and quintessentially British setting.
- The Nyetimber Estate in West Sussex dates back to 1086 when it was recorded in the Domesday Book as ‘Nitimbreha’, meaning ‘new wood’. The oldest standing building on the estate, our Medieval Barn, was built by monks in 1450.Nyetimber make their wines from 100% estate-grown fruit. This is incredibly rare in the world of sparkling wine.
- The Queen has enjoyed Nyetimber on several occasions, most notably on the royal barge for her Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
- Many of Nyetimber’s wines from the 1990s, e.g. 1992, 1996, 1998, are still in great condition and tasting sensational (if you can get your hands on them!).
Nyetimber: Their Commitments to Sustainability
Without doubt, society is increasingly becoming more aware of the
environmental implications of everyday life. From the way we travel, what we consume and to how we dress, there’s debate around each and every aspect. However, we are increasingly adopting practices to ensure that we achieve a more sustainable way of life. And companies are doing their bit too.
Whilst they produce an outstanding array and quality of English sparkling wines, Nyetimber ensures that enjoying a glass of bubbly should not come at the expense of any environmental impact, through land and resource use, and carbon footprint. They have consistently tried to make improvements to their environmental performance; in fact, Nyetimber are proud to be one of the founding members of Sustainable Wines GB. here’s a few key initiatives that align with their environmental responsibility:
- Approximately 30% of Nyetimber estate contains naturally produced wildlife corridors, with woods, gardens, ponds, and meadows, all for larger fauna to roam in.
- For over 10 years, Nyetimber have allowed sheep, in some of their vineyards, to graze the grass as an alternative to using mowers. Whilst a small change, it has great impact on the soil; the reduction in tractors aids in minimising soil compaction and carbon emissions.
- Pruning waste and pressed grape skins from winemaking are composted and returns to the vineyards, acting as natural fertilisers.
- Since 2008, their glass bottles have weighed 835g (70g below the industry standard), resulting in 10% saving in journeys made, emissions and fuel consumption.
- The foil cap on each bottle is made using a plant-derived laminate between the two layers of foil, eliminating the need for a synthetic polymer. It’s safe to say that no detail remains unexplored or forgotten about when it comes to Nyetimber and their products, emanating how much it recognises the impact they have on nature, society, and the economy.
An Inside Scoop
We spoke to Zoe, one of Nyetimber’s brand ambassadors, and asked her
favourite things about Nyetimber:
“Firstly, the attention to detail. Quality is at the heart of everything we do at Nyetimber and there really is a constant strive for perfection. I genuinely believe this shows through in every wine we produce – I love every single one! Secondly, Nyetimber wines are all wines of elegance and finesse and, as a result, they can pair beautifully with a wide range of flavours and cuisines. I also can’t say enough good things about the Estate itself. Nestled in the heart of West Sussex, is one of the most beautiful, peaceful places you can imagine. Rich in history and blessed with some stunning views – I highly recommend a visit!”
Here at Keith Prowse, working with companies that display the same care and desire to protect the environment is important; we are certainly proud to be associated with a supplier that is so dedicated to sustainable practices in their obtaining, sourcing, and delivering methods.
