Henley Royal Regatta is an iconic event steeped in history and is the very pinnacle of the British rowing calendar. We will look to explore the history of this iconic event which has run since 1839. HRR is often considered as the most prestigious regatta in the world, with over 300 races across the six days. Henley sees over 300,000 guests over the course of its regatta annually, with the number continuing to rise year on year.
Henley has been independently run since it first began, meaning it is independent from the national governing body of rowing. The prestige of Henley is upheld by its own independent umpires and stewards who ensure races are ran fairly and spectators experience Henley in the best way possible. This has allowed Henley to stay true to their originality and keep a high level of authenticity.
Henley Regatta was first held in 1839 as a public attraction hosted by the mayor and people of Henley. With the focus being more on the fair and other amusements over the rowing which quickly changed. In 1851 Henley gained its Royal title which has continued ever since, giving it a large presence and stature.
As Henley has grown over the years the investment into the event has drastically increased, with the event being held across five days due to the increased entry numbers and spectators. In 1987 the purchase of Temple Island, the historic Fawley Temple is based at the start of the Royal Regatta course situated on Temple Island, a private island in the middle of the river where a folly is situated. The private venue was originally built as a fishing lodge for Fawley Court in 1771 and to this day guests at the Royal Regatta can enjoy the views Temple Island has to offer.
How has it changed over the year? The scale of Henley has drastically increased with rowers from all around the world able to enter and compete for the dazzling silverware on offer, this includes countries such as Australia and South Africa who both have a heavy presence of competitors.
