Polo In the Park - A Day At The Hurlingham Club

February 27, 2023
Polo in The Park brings people together to enjoy one of the oldest team sports in the world. The Hurlingham Club is steeped in history and heritage, it first introduced polo to its members in 1874 and it was immediately a huge success. In 1875 the Hurlingham Club Committee formalised and drew up the rules of the game, and it also became known as the historic home of Polo. Still to this day, the Hurlingham Polo Association remains the controlling body of the sport.

For those that don’t know much about polo the basics of the game are as follows:

• Each team is comprised of four players.
• The aim of the game is to score the most points, points are scored by driving the ball between the opposing teams goal posts.
• After a team scores, both teams swap ends.
• All players must only use their right hand when hitting the ball.
• The mounts used in a game of polo are called ‘polo ponies’.
• A player will typically use 1-3 ponies per game, at elite level it is common to have up to eight ponies per player.
• The field is 300 yards long and 160 yards wide.
• A full game is six chukkas* long.
• Each chukka* is seven minutes long.

*Chukka – a period of play
