It’s official! The cinch Championships King, Matteo Berrettini, will return to W14 in 2023, in an attempt to retain the trophy for a third year. The 26-year-old Italian and former World No.6 is known in the tennis world for his ferocious serves and fiery topspin forehand, which, anyone he faces on the opposite side of the net, is well aware of.
He is only the second player in the Open Era to win back-to-back titles in his first appearances at the tournament; his first victory came about in 2021, after he defeated Brit Cam Norrie in a three-set thriller final. A year later, he reigned supreme once again, as the Serb tennis player Filip Krajinovic 7-5, 6-4 and the crowd erupted as he lifted the silverware for the second time.
Clearly, Berrettini’s hunger to clench the title for the third time is prominent, and he can’t wait to get back to the grass courts of London’s prestigious Queen’s Club this June.
What’s more, a star-studded line-up is already in the making, as Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz and Americans Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe will join Berrettini at the cinch Championships this year! Alcaraz and Fritz currently feature in the top five of the ATP rankings, meaning this is the first time that two of the men’s top five will play at this ATP 500 tournament since 2017.
Whilst Alcaraz boasts a career high ranking of World No.1 and a US Open title, his first Grand Slam title, Fritz and Tiafoe have both enjoyed title-winning success on British grass courts; the former enjoyed lifting the trophy at the Rothesay International Eastbourne, whilst Tiafoe enjoyed a win at the Nottingham Open in 2021.
The cinch Championships at The Queen’s Club is known as a key indicator for Wimbledon, and kickstarts the British grass court season in style. Named as ATP 500 tournament of the year four times, most recently in 2022, it is certainly a tournament that any player would be proud to play in. Past players have included British legend and former World No.1 Andy Murray, who, with five titles, is has won the most Queen’s Club titles ever, and current World No.1 Novak Djokovic.
British representation is eagerly awaited, and the full line-up will be confirmed towards the end of May.
