The Hundred squad announcement

March 24, 2023

The Hundred 2023 draft happened on Thursday 23rd March 2023, and we want to give you the low down on how it went down. With some exciting names in the running for this year’s draft, we were certainly watching closely to see who managed to snap up the top pickings!

Keith Prowse is proud to be selling Official Hospitality for The Hundred at Edgbaston Stadium and The Kia Oval. With this in mind, we are going to focus on The Birmingham Phoenix and The Oval Invincibles teams. So, let's dive straight in.

There are 3 stages of picking the 2023 teams – Player retention, The Draft and the Vitality Wildcard. Here’s a little more information about them:

Player Retention

Teams can retain players from the previous year to secure their key players and avoid them going on the market and being swooped up by the competition. Men’s teams can retain 10 players and one centrally contracted England player. Women’s teams have the option to retain up to four players however they can only keep a maximum of three marquee players.

One thing to note is teams do not have to use up their retention spots, as they may be looking to rebuild entirely, giving them more draft picks!

Birmingham Phoenix retained the following players, Men: Chris Woakes, Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali, Shadab Khan (O), Adam Milne (O), Benny Howell, Will Smeed, Kane Richardson (O), Tom Helm, Chris Benjamin, Dan Mousley. Women: Amy Jones, Ellyse Perry (O), Issy Wong, Emily Arlott

Oval Invincibles retained the following players, Men: Sam Curran, Sunil Narine (O), Will Jacks, Jason Roy, Tom Curran, Sam Billings, Saqib Mahmood, Jordan Cox, Gus Atkinson, Danny Briggs, Natha Sowter. Women: Marixanne Kapp (O), Alice Capsey, Lauren Winfield-Hill, Tash Farrant.

The Draft

Teams will get the opportunity to fill the gaps in each of their salary points, with the league being flipped upside down from last years final order.  So, this year’s pick went as followed:

The Men’s teams: Welsh Fire, Southern Brave Northern Superchargers, Oval Invincibles, Birmingham Phoenix, London Spirit, Manchester Originals, Trent Rockets.

The Women’s teams: Welsh Fire, London Spirit, Manchester Originals, Northern Superchargers, Birmingham Phoenix, Trent Rockets, Southern Brave, Oval Invincibles.

Each male player has a reserve price meaning that they cannot be purchased by a team for less than the reserve. Of course, the teams who are further up the pick will get the choice of those big-name players who will hopefully turn their team’s success around! Teams get a chance to resign players they previously had in their team when another team has made an offer even though they have not retained them, this can only be used for one player and is called “Right to Match”.

Birmingham Phoenix selected the following team:

Men:  Chris Woakes (England), Ben Duckett, Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali, Shadab Khan – Overseas, Adam Miln (overseas), Benny Howell, Will Smeed, Kane Richardson (overseas), Jamie Smith, Tom Helm, Miles Hammond, Chris Benjamin, Dan Mousley, Vitality Wildcard Pick, Vitality Wildcard Pick.

Vitality Wildcard

Teams who have left space on their teams can secure a player through the Vitality Wildcard. This is a way of rewarding domestic players in the vitality blast with a Hundred contract and the chance for a Hundred team to snap up an in-form player. This Wildcard does not take place until closer to the start of the tournament.
