It’s safe to say that the player line-up for this year’s cinch Championships will be one to remember. In the latest round of confirmed players, The Queen’s Club’s greatest champion, Sir Andy Murray, RETURNS for 2023!
The people’s favourite will once again grace the courts in W14, as he looks to add another title to his Queen’s Club record. Just as a reminder, no player in the tournament’s history has ever had a greater career at The Queen’s Club than Murray, as he boasts a staggering six titles at this ATP 500 event. His five singles and one doubles titles stand out, alongside his 31 total singles wins, 15 tournament appearances and taking home $1,462,642 in total prize money at Queen’s – and let’s not forget the number of classic Murray moments there!
Murray first graces the famous Centre Court at Queen’s when he was just 18 years old, as the young British wildcard in the 2005 edition. The iconic match against Thomas Johansson went down in history, and the Brit had certainly made his mark at the West London venue.
His first Queen’s victory came about in 2008, and he was the first Brit to lift the silverware since Bunny Austin in 1934. The era of dominance for Murray would begin three years later, as he won four out of six Queen’s Club singles tournaments and became the all-time leading champion. Despite his long run of injuries in more recent years and his inability to perform at his best, he was able to form one half of the dream doubles partnership with Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in 2019, as he claimed his first doubles title at Queen’s.
What’s next for Murray at The Queen’s Club? His love affair with this prestigious venue continues to flourish as he returns this June; however, he will come up against the likes of current World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz, back-to-back Queen’s champion Matteo Berrettini, American Frances Tiafoe and his Brit rivals – Cam Norrie, Dan Evans and Jack Draper.
That’s right, the Norrie-Evans-Draper trio have also been CONFIRMED to play singles at the 2023 cinch Championships. Norrie was a 2022 Wimbledon semi-finalist, and will certainly put Murray through his paces, whilst Canadian Open semi-finalist Dan Evans and youngster Jack Draper will look to steal the crown.
