Wales has become synonymous with rugby since that day with the principality producing no fewer than 19 players to the World Rugby Hall of Fame, winning 12 Grand Slams and making three Rugby World Cup semi-final appearances.
During their Golden Era in the 1970s the men in red were famed for playing an attractive style of running rugby, focusing on agility, flair, and a natural passing game to beat their opponents. In more recent times under New Zealander Warren Gatland, Wales have prided themselves on their superior fitness levels, clever kicking strategy and highly organised defence to win titles.
Although they have struggled for form since the last Rugby World Cup in 2019, Wales always raise their game for the England v Wales match.
Players to watch
Wales’s most successful head coach Warren Gatland returned to the role in January and has had a big job on his hands combining legendary veterans with raw young talent.
Wales will once again rely on Test match centurions and British & Irish Lions trio Ken Owens, Alun Wyn Jones and Taulupe Faletau for leadership and a physical edge up front. Owens took over the captain’s armband for their 2023 Guinness Six Nations campaign.
Meanwhile in the backs, Gloucester flyer Louis Rees-Zammit has the potential to light up the Rugby World Cup in France later this year with his incredible speed, often leaving defenders in his wake.
Cardiff Rugby’s 20-year-old Mason Grady has a big future ahead of him in the Welsh midfield as does his centre partner Joe Hawkins. They’ll both be relishing another opportunity to line up alongside each other in another big Test match.
What to expect for England v Wales Summer Series
England v Wales is one of the biggest fixtures in the rugby calendar. This match has a long and storied history with great moments, players and matches echoing down the annals of the game.
England have never lost a Summer Series match against Wales at Twickenham in three previous attempts and after England’s Guinness Six Nations win in Cardiff earlier this year, the form book suggests another England victory.
But after a difficult year in Welsh Rugby with troubles on and off the pitch, don’t rule out the Welsh to put in a big performance and sneak a morale boasting win ahead of the Rugby World Cup in France in September.
