25th Women's Ashes Series - How does it work?

April 28, 2023
The Women’s Ashes is a cricket competition between England and Australia, inspired by the men’s competition that started in 1882, the Women’s Ashes series started 52 years on in 1934. This was not only the first edition of the Women’s Ashes, but also the first Women’s Test Match ever! Since then, 24 editions have been played with the 25th happening in England across June and July this year.

How does it work?

England Womens TeamUp until 2013 the Women’s Ashes followed a similar format to the men’s competition where the title was decided solely by Test Matches. This was format from 1934 until 2013 when they decided to change how the Women’s Ashes was played. The series now consists of a mixture of formats including, Test, ODI and IT20. There are seven matches played in the competition, one being a Test, three ODI’s and three IT20’s. The Test is worth 4 points and the ODI’s and T20’s are worth 2 points each. If a game is drawn or called off the points are split evenly between the teams. The winning side is whoever has the most points at the end of the seven matches. If it ends and both teams are on the same number of points, the side that won the previous Ashes retains the trophy.

History and results

Since the Women’s Ashes begun, Australia has won 10, England won 6 and 8 have been drawn. Since the format changed in 2013 there have been 6 Ashes played, Australia have won 3, England 2 and 1 has been drawn.
The Ashes have been held by Australia since they won the 2015 Series. One key player that has done incredibly well under the new format is Ellyse Perry for Australia. Since 2013 she has got the highest total number of runs out of any player, as well as the highest number of wickets. She is a real all-rounder who is a key member of Australia’s team.
