On Saturday, we welcomed four hopeful semi-finalists to the iconic Edgbaston Stadium, for what was set to be another exhilarating Finals Day – and wow, it did not disappoint.
There was a plethora of action on and off the field and one team walked away T20 Blast Champions for the very first time in their club’s history.
Let’s take a closer look at what happened…
There were four teams welcomed into the grounds at B5 on Saturday, those teams were Somerset, Surrey, Gloucestershire and Sussex.
Somerset were the reigning champions coming into the weekend, they were aspiring to be the first team ever to successfully defend their T20 Blast title and so had everything to gain but also everything to lose. They were up against Surrey in the first semi-final of the day.
Surrey had a strong 14 player squad coming into the semi-final. That included three regular England players – Chris Jordan, Tom Curran and Ollie Pope, so on paper – looked to have an extremely strong chance of making it to the Final. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be for Surrey, and they fell 6 wickets short of victory, as Somerset secured the first semi-final win of the day and their place into the evening Final.
The second semi-final of the day was underdogs Gloucestershire v Sussex Sharks. After bowling the Sharks for 106, it was easy pickings for Gloucestershire as they chased Sussex down with 8 wickets to spare – a thrashing in anyone’s books!
Gloucestershire v Somerset – these were your 2024 T20 Blast Finalists. Both teams were looking to make history for their clubs. Somerset, looking to be the first team ever to retain the title, and Gloucestershire looking to win the coveted title for the very first time in their club’s history.
The toss was done, and Gloucestershire decided to bowl first, as they had done in the semi-final. Somerset gave it everything, and they finished their innings on a respectable 124. But it just wasn’t enough, and Somerset were no match for the hungry Gloucestershire.
After winning three matches in a row at Edgbaston Stadium – quarter, semi and final - they had done it, Gloucestershire had secured the win against their West Country rivals by eight wickets with 31 balls to spare.
We’ve spoken a lot about the happenings on the pitch, but what about off it?
Well, we (Keith Prowse) welcomed hundreds of lovely guests to our facilities to experience all of the action with us. The atmosphere was electric, the food exceptional and the views – well, we don’t call them the best seats in the house for nothing!
Glynn Purnell cooked up a storm in the Warwickshire Suite, serving a delightful three-course menu with interval snacks and late bites, and we had cricketing legend Dominic Cork in our facilities mingling with guests.
