Earth Day 2024

one minute
Did you know it takes 23 gallons of water to create just 1 gallon of Almond Milk? And 495 gallons of water to create one beef meal?

What is Earth Day?

Earth Day is a global annual event to show support for environmental protection. The very first Earth Day was organised on 22 April 1970, and since then, EARTHDAY.ORG has been mobilising over one billion people annually to help do our bit and protect the planet. Evolving to be one of the largest civic events on Earth, it has encouraged 192 countries to fight for a brighter future.

Striving towards sustainability is a key business output in the world we live in – with Earth Day (or Earth Week) the key point in the calendar to talk about this topic.

When is Earth Day 2024?

Monday 22 to Friday 26 April 2024.

The official theme for Earth Day 2024 is Planet vs Plastics. Scientists believe that microplastics in our bodies may contribute to and be responsible for autism, cancers, Alzheimer’s and falling fertility rates among the global population. The goal is to achieve a 60% reduction in plastic by 2040. To help implement the needed change among society, there is a push for a strong UN Treaty on Plastic Pollution and to inspire change in the bid to significantly reduce the health risks and impacts of plastic to improve the lives of generations to come.

What is Keith Prowse doing for Earth Day?

Small actions can significantly help to make a big impact and are often more achievable for us to implement on a daily basis into our lives. For this reason, we are running an Earth Week this year in the business, in which a daily employee activation will aim to encourage all staff to come together and take part in making small steps to help the planet. We’ll also be encouraging our extended community across our socials to follow and make small changes to their day throughout the week, aiming to increase awareness. Some of these include:

• Tuning off the office lights at certain times of the day to save energy
• Encourage staff to make more sustainable food choices on Stop Food Waste Day - whether that be using what’s already in the fridge or having a plant-based meal
• Participate in a car share or opt for public transport to get to the office wherever possible to reduce emissions, or cycle and walk to work
• Litter picking scavenger hunt – a little competition between our team to pick up as much litter as possible to reduce plastic pollution

All of these initiatives aim to contribute towards our net zero targets and sustainability goals, and while they’re small steps, these can easily be integrated into our lives to lead a more sustainable life to help our Earth and reduce plastics.

Keep an eye out on our socials throughout the week to stay up to date with what we’re doing and our progress:
