A rivalrous history. Two tremendously dynamic teams. Another epic showdown.

England v South Africa will come head-to-head once again in November for the 2024 Autumn Nations Series, one year on from their tense 2023 Rugby World Cup semi-final extravaganza.

The first time the two sides met was in 1906 when South Africa first toured Europe and they have been playing Test matches ever since.

The rich history shared between the two teams sees closely contested battles that provide drama, thrill and plenty of excitement – a fixture that is never to be missed by fans.

So, let’s get into the essentials that you need to know before you witness them return to Twickenham this November.

South Africa Rugby History

The South African rugby union team have a long and illustrious history dating back to their first intentional fixture in 1891 when the British Isles were touring. The South African Rugby Union was founded 100 years later in 1992 following the merger to two governing bodies after the end of Apartheid.

South African rugby fans are incredibly passionate and live and breathe the sport, being a symbol of their national pride, even for those who don’t follow the sport.

The Springboks have a healthy list of coveted titles under their belts, including the greatest of them all, the Rugby World Cup title in 1995 (their debut World Cup), 2007, 2019 and most recently 2023. They’ve won an astonishing half of the Rugby World Cups that they’ve participated in.

At the time of writing the Boks are currently the top-ranked team in the world by World Rugby, and it’s always a huge occasion for rugby fans over the world when they get the chance to witness their teams face the might Springboks. After all, who wouldn’t want to see the best in the world?

Past England v South Africa results

England and South Africa have played each other in 46 Test matches. England’s first win over the Springboks took place in 1969 on their home turf at Twickenham with a 11-8 victory, before the home side enjoyed a consecutive seven victory run from 2000 to 2006.

They last played each other in the 2023 Rugby World Cup – and WHAT a game that was! Whether you were supporting the Springboks or England, you would have been on the edge of your seat for sure.

England were leading at half time 12-6, and a drop goal by Owen Farrell led them 15-6 ahead in the 52nd minute. That was until the 69th minute when the Boks scored a try, bringing them just two points behind England. And then THE MOMENT – a penalty to South Africa was awarded in the 77th minute, and Pollard kicks the ball straight between the sticks, sending them to the Final against New Zealand – with just ONE point in it!
