England v Australia is a fixture that doesn’t come by every year, but when it does, it’s always one that is immensely exciting and offers a great contest.
Australia are set to return to the
Allianz Stadium, Twickenham in November 2024 for the second match in the
Men’s Autumn Nations Series. Before the upcoming tournament and match, we thought we’d look at the history of the two teams, their previous wins and how you can be there with our VIP Experiences.
Where it all started
This rugby union rivalry goes back to 1909, when Australia faced England whilst they were on their British tour, but it wasn’t until 1928 that the Wallabies first played at then known as Twickenham Stadium. In the early years, the two sides faced each other sporadically, where the majority of fixtures took place in ten- or twenty-year intervals due to World War II and the fact that travel to and from the two countries was much more difficult than it is today.
The introduction of the Cook Cup came at the end of the amateur era and beginning of Rugby Union’s professional era when the Rugby Football Union (RFU) and the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) decided to put an agreement together to play on a home-and-away basis. It has been contested almost every year, apart from the World Cup years, but was renamed in 2022 to become the Ella-Mobbs Trophy.
Who has won the most matches?
The two teams have played each other a total of 55 times since 1909, and
England are currently winning the series 28 wins to 26 with one match drawn – it’s a pretty close win margin that leaves no room for error – no pressure boys!
When it comes to wins claimed on England’s green and pleasant land (which have mainly been held at the Allianz Stadium, Twickenham aka the Home of England Rugby), out of the total 29 played, the Red and Whites have claimed the most wins with 17, and the Wallabies have won 11 and drawn one. But in the land Down Under, the Wallabies have claimed 15 out of 23 wins, so the home advantage is a key factor so it seems! England experienced the longest winning streak from 2016 to 2022 with eight under their belts compared to Australia’s four.
Australia return for the 2024 Autumn Nations Series
The last time Australia came to the Allianz Stadium, Twickenham was for the Autumn Nations Series in 2021, where England won 32-15, and we’re excited to say that they will be returning in November for the 2024 edition of the series –
Saturday 9 November if you want to mark it in your diary.
The sides have played each other three times since 2021, all during England’s 2022 Tour to Australia where England claimed two of the three wins 17-25 and 17-21, and Australia took the one win 30-28. As the results suggest, they were closely fought matches with pretty tight final scorecards.
England will be looking to claim a dominant win at their home ground to widen the score gap, but Australia will be wanting to close in on England and take their total wins to 27.
