The Past Five Winners of the Queen's Club Championships

three minutes
The summer of tennis is fast approaching, and we cannot wait to witness some unprecedented play: incredible things always happen during the grass court season!
In anticipation of the cinch Championships (taking pace from 15 - 23 June 2024), we are taking a trip down memory lane by recalling what happened during the amazing finals matches we have had over the past six years.

2023 – Carlos Alcaraz

Last year, Carlos Alcaraz made his debut at The Queen’s Club. It is safe to say he made a huge impression, defeating world No.9 Alex de Minaur and winning the tournament at the age of just 20!
During the finals match, de Minaur struggled to break Alcaraz’s resilience and agility as he won ten sets in a row, ending the match with a 6-4, 6-4 win.
Alcaraz’s invincibility during the cinch Championships was repeated a couple weeks later at The Championships, Wimbledon where he beat world No.1 Novak Djokovic and took home the Grand Slam title – an inspirational and jaw-dropping moment!
Will he ‘do the double’ again when he returns to both tournaments this year? He has already confirmed his attendance at the 2024 cinch Championships, and we’re certain he won’t pass on the opportunity to defend his Wimbledon title either!

2022 – Matteo Berrettini

In 2022, Matteo Berrettini returned the the cinch Championships as the reigning champion. He defended his title by defeating world No.38 Filip Krajinovic.
The outcome of this meeting was not surprising as Berrettini was the firm favourite and world No.10 at the time. However, Krajinovic did put up a fight, with many big rallies, forcing the first set to reach 7-5, and the second 6-4.

2021 – Matteo Berrettini

Berrettini set the bar high for the likes of Alcaraz by also winning his debut appearance at The Queen’s Club in 2021. This was the first debut triumph since Boris Becker’s final in 1985.
Berrettini’s opponent, Cameron Norrie, was also hoping to make tennis history as he tried to become the second British player to win the tournament (after Andy Murray) since the second World War.
As both players were determined to make sporting history, the match was destined to be immense. Indeed, three demanding sets were played as Norrie won the tie-break of the second set. However, Berrettini stunned Norrie with his mighty serve, winning the title 6-4, 6-7, 6-3.

2019 - Feliciano Lopez

The 2019 Queen’s Club final was another unprecedented match. The trophy was taken home by wildcard Feliciano Lopez, who was ranked 113th at the time. The last time a wildcard had won was 20 years prior, when Pete Sampras took the title. He certainly deserved to be the wildcard!Lopez was up against another veteran player, Giles Simon who was determined to gain his first grass court title. Simon had played fantastically throughout the tournament, knocking out the world No.2 (Anderson) and No.4 (Medvedev) before he met Lopez. However, Lopez did not let this panic him and he won the final 6-2, 6-7, 7-6. His success was emphasized later that afternoon when he went on to win the doubles final with Andy Murray – a seriously impressive display of tennis and athleticism!

2018 – Marin Cilic

In 2018, spectators of the Cilic v Djokovic Queen’s Club final were not disappointed. The match lasted nearly three hours and ended with Cilic beating one of the greatest players of all time.
Being up against Novak Djokovic meant there was no doubt that the game would be challenging and gruelling. It went to three sets, with the middle set reaching tie break. Despite loosing the first set, Cilic made his come back and won the trophy 5-7, 7-6, 6-3.
Both players showcased their sporting talent and resilience in in this final. Cilic defeated Djokovic, for only the second time in sixteen matches, and despite his defeat, Djokovic went on to win Wimbledon just a few weeks later!

The past five finals of the cinch Championship have been so exciting, and we cannot wait to see what 2024 will bring. Will Alcaraz follow in Berrettini’s footsteps and take home the trophy two years in a row?
