What Happened At The 2024 US Open

one minute

September means one thing and one thing only in the tennis world – the US Open. The fourth and final Grand Slam of the calendar year has come to an end, and we were served a smashing amount of action, making the end of summer blues in the UK a little more bearable.

Sinner and Sabalenka can say they are the 2024 champions and had the honours of proudly lifting the trophy after a deserving fight.

The 2024 edition of the US Open saw upsets, shock early exists and career-breaking moments. With Carlos Alcaraz leaving the tournament in the second round, and Novak Djokovic losing in the third, the door was left slightly more open for the rest of the men and a new winner from 2023.

Backing the Brits

If you haven’t come across Jack Draper too much before, firstly where have you been?! But in all seriousness, the British tennis player is only getting bigger and better, and this year’s US Open performance reflects just that.

After winning UTS in 2023 at the Grand Final – tennis’s latest fast, furious and thrilling innovative league - on his home turf in London, Draper has shone ever since. Jack enjoyed a career high to reach his first Grand Slam semi-final at this year’s US Open and is regraded to be the future of British tennis. He won his very first ATP title at the BOSS Open in Stuttgart in 2024 and has been progressing well in all his matches over the year.

The 22-year-old unfortunately couldn’t make it to the finals as he fell to the eventual US Open champion, Jannik Sinner. He put in an astonishing performance during the tournament and played with a cool and collected manner during his matches in New York. He defeated Alex de Minaur in three straight sets in the quarter-final to reach this incredible stage of the tournament. He suddenly became visibly unwell during his quarter-final match and became victim to nausea during an already physical and demanding match. However, things can only get better for this upcoming star.

The Champions

Jannik Sinner

The 23-year-old Italian was dominant in Flushing Meadows after having an incredible 2024 which kicked off with a Grand Slam title at the Australian Open. He has been a consistent performer particularly on hard courts and has secured his place as World No.1 this year, giving him a great confidence with his play.

The Men’s Singles Final clash was between Sinner and 12th seed American Taylor Fritz.
Sinner claimed the win and championship title 6-3, 6-4, 7-5, leading him to become the fourth man to win both the Australian Open and US Open titles in the same year since 1988. This is the Italian’s second Grand Slam title. He just missed out on a semi-final place at Wimbledonin 2024 to Daniil Medvdedev, but there is sure to be much more success for him at the Grand Slams to come.

Aryna Sabalenka

It was a huge win for Sabalenka in the Women’s Single’s Final on Saturday too, where she faced the American Jessica Pegula. In two sets she won her first US Open title 7-5, 7-5 but not before facing a mighty comeback from the No.6 seed, who was down 0-3 and won five straight games, threatening Sabalenka to a third set.

11 out of her total 13 titles have been won on hard courts outside of the majors. The current World No.2 player was powerful on court and wasn’t afraid to come to the net to put on a dominant front against her opponent. We think it’s only going to get better and better for Sabalenka, and we can’t wait to see what she can do in the 2025 season.

Let’s see what the rest of the 2024 season brings, and roll on 2025!
