The 2024 women’s tennis season has delivered thrilling moments with new champions, close calls, and rising stars, with three different women claiming the Grand Slam titles. As the year wraps up, we highlight the top five players whose success has defined the season. From Grand Slam victories to impressive performances at key tournaments like The Championships, Wimbledon and the Rothesay International Eastbourne, these athletes have captivated fans.
Iga Świątek continues to dominate women’s tennis, with a standout victory in France when she claimed her fourth Roland Garros title, showing her strength on clay. She also went on to claim a third Doha title and her second title at the India Wells, showing her versatility and mental toughness on different surfaces. Despite not finishing 2024 in the No.1 spot, she remains a huge force to be reckoned with.
Świątek’s game revolves around aggressive baseline play, exceptional movement, and relentless focus. Her ability to switch between attack and defence with ease makes her one of the most complete players on tour today.
After near-misses in previous years, Aryna Sabalenka broke through by winning the Australian Open at the start of 2024. She unfortunately fell victim so some injuries over the year, forcing her to end hopes of a Wimbledon title and a medal at the Olympic Games. She bounced back with dominance though, becoming the 2024 US Open champion, making it her third in New York. Sabalenka ends the 2024 season on a high, achieving a 56-14 win-loss record, four singles titles and she has claimed the year-end No.1 ranking.
Known for her explosive serve and powerful groundstrokes, Sabalenka’s aggressive style is difficult for opponents to handle. Her improved ability to stay composed under pressure has helped her become one of the sport’s elite players.
The US rising star was a breakthrough star in the 2024 season. She started 2024 by claiming her first WTA Tour title in Hobart, and enjoyed a win over Sabalenka at Indian Wells and two Slam wins over fellow American Coco Gauff. Navarro finished in the final eight at Wimbledon and final four of the US Open, so she is sure to want to top that in 2025 and put up a serious fight.
Emma – who is ending 2024 as world No.8 - will begin 2025 within the top 10 women’s players after enjoying great success. We can’t wait to see what she will do next year!
Coco Gauff ended the 2024 season as world No. 3, ending with a win at the WTA Finals beating Sabalenka and Świątek. She reached two Grand Slam semi-finals at the Australian and French Opens. Her Wimbledon campaign ended in the fourth round, as it did at the US Open, but Gauff can be proud of an impressive 2024.
Gauff’s game is built on speed, powerful groundstrokes, and mental resilience. Despite her young age, she has developed the ability to stay calm under pressure, making her a player to watch for years to come.
On the British-front, Emma Raducanu returned to action after a run of injuries, and enjoyed some positive results. She reached the fourth round at Wimbledon and helped Team GB to secure a place in the Billie Jean King Cup Finals. However, Raducanu’s combination of speed, precision, and mental toughness continues to excite fans and promise a bright future.
Katie Boulter also had a standout season, putting on her best level performance in San Diego, defeating four consecutive seeds which are now all top 20 players, showing her quality. She went out of Wimbledon in the second round after losing to fellow Brit Harriet Dart. Known for her aggressive playing style and solid baseline game, Boulter has become one of the most consistent British players on the circuit, and she has shown serious potential for the 2025 season ahead.
The future of women’s tennis looks exciting, with talents like Lulu Sun and 19-year-old Robin Montgomery from the USA making waves on the WTA tour – not to mention Paolini storming onto the stage. 20-year-old Diana Shnaider from Russia was ranked outside the top 60 in May 2024, but reached a career high of No.20 after reaching the semi-finals in Toronto, thanks to her incredible power and tactical skills.
Similarly, Amanda Anisimova from the USA returned to the WTA Tour showing potential for a positive future climb after reaching the WTA Final in Toronto.
The 2024 season has showcased a fantastic blend of seasoned champions and emerging stars. Iga Świątek and Aryna Sabalenka lifted major trophies, while Paolini enjoyed a fantastic rise towards the top, and British stars like Katie Boulter continued to inspire fans at home and gain great all-round results.
As the tour gears up for 2025, the tennis world can expect even more drama and excitement—especially at The Championships, Wimbledon and the Rothesay International Eastbourne, where these players will surely compete for glory once again.
