The Grass Court Double

one minute
London’s historic Queen’s Club attracts global tennis stars who descend upon West Kensington to fight for the coveted trophy in preparation for third grand Slam of the year, The Championships, Wimbledon. The HSBC Championships at Queen’s Club – ATP500 is a key indicator for player’s success at Wimbledon, and it’s often those who are crowned champions at Queen’s that go on to win Wimbledon just days later!

As one of the biggest tournaments in the lead up to Wimbledon – mainly as it’s also a grass-court event - players on the men’s ATP Tour prepare for the occasion by getting used to the style of play the court produces.

Let’s take at who’s done the double!

Which players have completed the grass court double?

The Queen’s Club / Wimbledon title double has only been completed in the same year seven times in history. Here are the legendary players who have won both tournaments, lifting the trophies within just weeks of each other:

John McEnroe: 1981 and 1984
Jimmy Connors: 1982
Boris Becker: 1985
Pete Sampras: 1995 and 1999
Lleyton Hewitt: 2002
Rafael Nadal: 2008
Andy Murray: 2013 and 2016
Carlos Alcaraz: 2023

British tennis player, Sir Andy Murray, has won five Queen’s Club titles in his career, the highest number out of all the players in the tournament’s history.

Which players didn’t complete the grass court double but performed well?

Matteo Berrettini

Berrettini won the tournament at The Queen’s Club in 2021 and went on to progress to the Wimbledon final, but narrowly missed the Grand Slam victory to the mighty Novak Djokovic. Berrettini also lifted the trophy in 2022, but unfortunately didn’t compete at Wimbledon that year.

Sir Andy Murray

In 2015, Sir Andy Murray won the title at The Queen’s Club and progressed to the semi-finals at Wimbledon, losing to Roger Federer in a close contest. He then went on to achieve the grass-court double in 2016, coming back with a vengeance!

Andy Roddick

Andy Roddick made it to the quarterfinals of Wimbledon after winning at The Queen’s Club Championships in 2007, showing strong performance on court at the Grand Slam shortly after winning in West Kensington.

Which players love the LTA Championships at Queen’s Club – ATP500?

Andy Murray is a certified fan of the iconic championships at The Queen’s Club, having played in the tournament for many years. We’re also sure that 2023 champion and Wimbledon 2023 and 2024 title holder - Carlos Alcaraz - has a soft spot for this tournament given his success, not to mention the British crowd’s positive reaction to the player! He also played at the tournament in 2024, but unfortunately didn’t progress to the finals. He did however claim the Grand Slam title for the second year running at Wimbledon despite this!
