Known affectionately as simply ‘The Bridge’ by fans, Stamford Bridge is a football stadium in south west London, which has been home to Chelsea Football Club since 1905. The stadium, however, was built some 28 years earlier in 1877, making it one of the oldest stadia in the world, and was previously home to London Athletic Club.

As an athletics venue, the original stadium was not wholly suitable for football and so Stamford Bridge as it is today was really born in 1904 when renowned stadia architect Archibald Leitch unveiled an initial plan for a 100,000 capacity venue. Whilst that capacity was ultimately scaled back, the stadium which Leitch eventually built was quickly adopted by the newly formed Chelsea Football Club.

Today, Stamford Bridge’s capacity stands at 41,631 and in spite of the stadium’s age it is still one of the most famous and beloved football venues in the UK.
