The men’s Argentina rugby union team, known as “Los Pumas” (The Pumas in English), played their first international match in Buenos Aires in 1910 against the touring British Isles.
The history of rugby in Argentina is long and colourful, with the first recorded match taking place in 1873 at the Buenos Aires Cricket Club Ground. It grew to become a popular sport in the country, being played by British and Irish expats. The Union Argentina de Rugby (UAR) was founded in 1899 to organise the sport in the country.
The Argentina rugby team were admitted to the International Rugby Board (now World Rugby) in 1987.
The Argentina rugby team participated in the first-ever Rugby World Cup in New Zealand and Australia in 1987. They have qualified for every edition of the tournament since, including a third-place finish at the 2007 Rugby World Cup and a 4th place finish in France in 2023.
The Argentina rugby union team have long been regarded as the dominant national team in the Americas. They were invited to join the southern hemisphere’s premier international tournament, the Rugby Championship in 2012 and they are now a force to be reckoned with in world rugby. They are a stern challenge for opposing teams when they tour the northern hemisphere during the Autumn Nations Series.
There have been many great players that have represented the Argentina rugby team over the years including World Rugby Hall of Fame inductees Hugo Porta (2008), Agustin Pichot (2011) and his long-time half-back partner Felipe Contepomi (2017).
