History of Australia Rugby

The men’s Australia rugby union team, known as “The Wallabies”, played their first international match in Sydney in 1899 defeating the British Isles side 13-3.

Despite competition from other sports, notably rugby league and Australian rules football, rugby union continued to grow in its heartlands of New South Wales and Queensland, where the game was managed at a local level until the formation of Rugby Australia in 1945 to govern the game.

Australia became affiliated to the International Rugby Board (now World Rugby) in 1949.

Winning Habits

They have participated in every Rugby World Cup, co-hosting the first one with New Zealand in 1987, before hosting solo in 2003. In 1999, they became the first country to win the famous Webb Ellis Trophy twice after their maiden victory in 1991. They have been finalists four times and will host the 2027 Men’s and 2029 Women’s Rugby World Cups.

The men’s Australian rugby union team have long been regarded as one of the most dominant national teams in the world. They were a founding member of the southern hemisphere’s premier international tournament the Rugby Championship. At domestic level their state teams have competed in the southern hemisphere’s elite club level competition, Super Rugby since it was formed in 1996.

Australia Rugby Legends

No fewer than 18 Australians have been inducted into World Rugby’s Hall of Fame, including iconic players like David “Campo” Campese (2013) and George Gregan (2013) who currently holds the record for most international caps for a scrum half with 139.
