Rugby Union has been a popular sport in Canada since 1874 when the students at McGill played their American counterparts from Harvard in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
A Canadian Rugby Union was established in 1884 but later evolved to become the governing body of the Canadian Football League. It was replaced by Rugby Canada in 1974 which assumed responsibility for governing the game in the country.
Canada made their Rugby World Cup debut at the inaugural event in 1987 in New Zealand and Australia and famously reached the quarter finals in 1991.
Rugby in Canada is growing in popularity outside of its traditional heartland in British Columbia. With the inclusion of the Toronto Arrows in Major League Rugby in 2019, Canada will continue to improve at international level in the years ahead.
Canada has produced several legendary players most notably World Rugby Hall of Fame Inductee Gareth Rees (2011). The former fly half played for several European clubs in the 1990s and scored 491 points for Canada during a 13-year international career.
