England Rugby Team History

The men’s England rugby union team, played in the sport’s first ever international test match against old rivals Scotland in 1871. The Rugby Football Union was founded earlier that year.

The game itself was founded by Englishman William Webb Ellis at Rugby School in 1823 and grew throughout the late nineteenth century, becoming a popular winter sport in English public schools. 

England have played their home matches at Twickenham Stadium in London, known by many devotees of the sport as the ‘Home of Rugby’ .

Winning habit

Amongst the England Rugby team’s most notable international achievements are their 29 outright tournament victories in the Guinness Six Nations (and previously the Five Nations) championship including and 13 Grand Slam wins.

The England rugby team have participated in every Rugby World Cup, hosting twice in 1991 and 2015. They became the first northern hemisphere team to win the Webb Ellis Trophy in 2003 when Jonny Wilkinson’s famous drop goal in extra time sealed victory against hosts Australia.

At domestic level their clubs have won Europe’s premier club competition, the European Rugby Champions Cup, a record 10 times.

England Rugby Legends

Along with Wilkinson, 19 other English players have been inducted into World Rugby’s Hall of Fame since 2006. World Cup winning captain Martin Johnson, World Rugby Chairman Bill Beaumont and legendary centre Jeremy Guscott are just some of the players to have been inducted.
