History of Fiji Rugby

The men’s Fiji rugby union team, known as “The Flying Fijians”, played their first international game in 1924 when they travelled to Apia to face their Pacific neighbours Samoa.

However, the game had been played in Fiji long before then with visiting British, New Zealand and Fijian soldiers playing matches on Fijian soil as early as 1884.

Fiji became a member union of the International Rugby Board (now World Rugby) in 1987, the same year they participated in the first-ever Rugby World Cup in New Zealand and Australia. They have qualified for eight tournaments since, making the quarter finals on three occasions.

Pacific Powerhouses

Despite its geographical challenges, the sport grew in Fiji to become the dominant sport on the islands in the early twentieth century, and to this day is one of the few countries in the world where rugby union can be classed as its national sport.

The Fiji rugby union team have long been seen as a highly entertaining and free-flowing side in world rugby. The relentless production line of talent coupled with Fijian Drua’s inclusion in Super Rugby Pacific from 2022 will see Fiji become a more prominent force in international rugby in the years ahead.

Fiji Rugby Legends

Famous the world over for their speed and attacking flair, they are also one of the leading nations in Rugby Sevens. They won Fiji’s first-ever Olympic gold medal at the rugby sevens event at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Sevens greats Waisale Serevi (2013) and Osea Kiolinisau (2021) are the only Fijians to date to be inducted into World Rugby’s Hall of Fame.
