History of the Georgia Rugby team

The men’s Georgia rugby union team, known as “The Lelos” (the name of a popular Georgian folk-sport similar to rugby), played their first international match against Zimbabwe in 1989.

Rugby Union has been played in Georgia since at least the 1930s with the Georgia Rugby Union, a domestic body within the Soviet Union being established in 1961. Throughout this period Georgians made up a large proportion of the U.S.S.R side.

The Georgian Rugby Union became members of World Rugby in 1992 following their independence from the Soviet Union a year earlier. They qualified for their first Rugby World Cup in Australia in 2003 and have been ever present in the tournament ever since. This has helped to propel rugby union to become one of the most popular sports in the country.
