Japan Rugby Union History

 

The Japan national rugby union team, known as “The Brave Blossoms”, played their first international match against a touring Canada team in 1932.

 

Rugby Union was first played in Japan in 1866, when the Yokohama Foot Ball Club was formed, playing matches against British service personnel. Popular amongst university students and with the support of the Japanese royal family, the game grew in popularity at the start of twentieth century.

  

The Japan Rugby Football Union was formed in 1926 to govern the game in the country, and they have been a member of World Rugby since 1987.

Legendary Japan rugby union team players include Daisuke Ohata who still holds the record for most international tries (69). Ohata was inducted into World Rugby’s Hall of Fame in 2016.

 

Japan Rugby Squad's Successes

 

Japan rugby team have become famous for their unlikely victories, especially at the Rugby World Cup. Their 34-32 victory over South Africa at the 2015 Rugby World Cup went down in history as one of the sport’s greatest upsets. The game was later made into a film starring Temuera Morrison called “The Brighton Miracle”.

 

The Japan rugby team have received many plaudits in recent years for their hi-tempo and fearless attacking style. This has made them a neutrals favourite as well as a unique and problematic assignment for their opponents when they tour Europe during the Autumn Nations Series.
