The men’s New Zealand rugby team, known as “The All Blacks” won their first international match in 1903 when they recorded a comfortable 22-3 victory over Australia in Sydney and been the dominant force on the international stage ever since.
New Zealand Rugby was formed in 1892 to govern the game in the country, and they have been a member of World Rugby since 1949.
The New Zealand All Blacks have won the men’s Rugby World Cup a record equalling three times (1987, 2011 and 2015) and hosted the maiden tournament in 1987 and again in 2011. They also have a pheromonal record playing in New Zealand. There last defeat at their fortress Eden Park in Auckland came in 1994 when they were defeated by 23-20 by France. The New Zealand rugby team and France have forged a major rivalry in the sport following several iconic matches in the Rugby World Cup and in the Autumn Nations Series.
Two-time Rugby World Cup winning captain Richie McCaw (2019), the game’s first global superstar Jonah Lomu are among the 26 New Zealand rugby team players who have been inducted into World Rugby’s Hall of Fame, more than from any other nation. New Zealander Dan Carter currently holds the world record for most test points with 1,598.
Famous for their traditional Maori ceremonial dance – the haka – and a fearsome aura of invincibility which has been honed by decades of success, the All Blacks are the benchmark and trend setters within the sport.
