Samoa Rugby History

The men’s Samoa rugby union team (also known as “Manu Samoa”) played their first international match as Western Samoa in 1924 when they hosted pacific neighbours Fiji in Apia.

Rugby union has been the national sport of Samoa since the 1980s thanks to regular fixtures against their pacific island neighbours Tonga and Fiji.

Pacific Powerhouses

Samoa made their Rugby World Cup debut in 1991 after a 14-match tour of Europe concluding a qualifying match against Japan. They upset the odds making it to the quarter finals, with famous victories over Wales and Argentina in the group stage.

The Samoa rugby union team’s highly physical brand of rugby and Rugby World Cup heroics have made them a side to be feared in recent years. The relentless production line of talent coupled with Manoa Pasifika’s inclusion in Super Rugby Pacific from 2022 will see Samoa become a more prominent force in international rugby in the years ahead.

 Samoa rugby legends

Famous the world over for their power and physicality, especially in defence, they have produced several legendary players including World Rugby Hall of Fame Inductees Peter Fatialofa (2019) and Brian Lima (2011). Lima, known as the “The Chiropractor” because of his powerful tackling, is one of only two players to have played in five editions of the Rugby World Cup.

Players of Samoan descent have also appeared for several other national sides in recent years including the Manu Tuilagi (both England), Sonny Bill Williams (New Zealand), Jordan Petaia (Australia) and Bundee Aki (Ireland).
