The men’s Scotland rugby union team won the first-ever international match when they beat England 1-0 in Edinburgh in 1871. They have enjoyed a long and storied rivalry against England competing against them annually since 1878 for the famous Calcutta Cup.
The Scottish Rugby Union was formed two years later in 1873 and was a founding member of the International Rugby Board (now World Rugby) in 1886.
The history of rugby in Scotland is steeped with success. They have participated in every single edition of the men’s Rugby World Cup, making the quarter finals on six occasions. Their best performance came in 1991 when they finished in fourth place. Meanwhile, they have won the Guinness Six Nations (and its predecessor the Five Nations) outright on 14 occasions.
No fewer than 11 Scotsmen have been inducted into World Rugby’s Hall of Fame, including legendary British and Irish Lions player and coach, Sir Ian McGeechan (2009), talismanic captain Gavin Hastings and the voice of rugby, the revered commentator Bill McClaren.
