Horse racing is a sport that offers something for everyone, from family days out to being a place to host clients, but if you’re new to the sport, the difference between Flat Racing and Jump Racing can sometimes be difficult to understand. While both deliver unrivalled excitement, atmosphere and tradition, each has its own character, pace and personality.
Understanding the difference between the two can help you choose the right racing experience for you.
Flat Racing takes place without jumps and is typically associated with speed, precision and tactics, with races often decided by incredibly small margins. Since the introduction of all-weather racing in 1989 the official Flat season now runs for a calendar year. However, the centrepiece of the Flat racing season is the Turf season which typically runs from late March to early November, races are run over a minimum distance of 5f up to a maximum of 2m6f.
The Flat season brings some of the biggest social occasions in the racing calendar. Royal Ascot is regarded as the biggest Flat racing Festival of the year, with five extraordinary days of racing, fashion and premium experiences. The Betfred Derby Festival boasts sporting heritage, with The Derby being the most famous and prestigious Flat race in the UK. Not to mention, a variety of race days at racecourses across the country.
For many guests, Flat Racing offers the perfect setting for a stylish day out. Think summer hospitality, great food and drink, socialising with friends or entertaining clients, all combined with world-class racing.
Jump Racing sees horses and jockeys compete over steeplechase fences or hurdles. The races are longer than those on the Flat, with horses required to demonstrate stamina, jumping ability and tactical skill.
Like Flat Racing, Jump Racing now takes places all year-round but it is widely associated with the autumn and winter months, October is where we will see the return of the most talked about horses as they make the start of their winter campaign and those that are truly special will have their sights firmly set on either The Cheltenham Festival or the Randox Grand National Festival, with there being high class Jump racing taking place most Saturdays until the finale at Sandown at the end of April, where the Champion Jump Jockey, Trainer and Owner are crowned.
For many racing fans, there is something particularly special about the atmosphere surrounding Jump Racing. The cold mornings and crisp afternoons as anticipation builds as the horses approach each obstacle, making every race an exciting experience for spectators.
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. The right race day depends on what you’re looking for.
Planning a celebration?
A race day can turn a birthday, anniversary or special occasion with friends into something memorable. Flat Racing can offer a glamorous summer occasion with the opportunity to dress up to feel your best, while Jump Racing brings a different kind of excitement, particularly around the major racing Festivals, there is still the opportunity to dress to feel your best, but the outfits are centred more around keeping warm, comfortable and looking stylish.
Entertaining clients?
Both Flat and Jump Racing can provide an impressive setting for corporate hospitality. Consider the type of experience you want to create, from relaxed networking over lunch to a premium dining experience followed by an afternoon of racing.
Looking for an adrenaline-filled experience?
Jump Racing could be the one for you. Watching horses jump fences and hurdles adds another dimension to the racing, with the atmosphere building as each race unfolds.
Looking for a summer day out?
Flat Racing could be the perfect choice. With longer days and a calendar packed with major events, it’s an opportunity to enjoy racing alongside great food, drinks and plenty of time to socialise.
